The Timeline

April 18–19, 2020. Golf-ball-size hail reported near Katy, according to spotter reports compiled by a storm-tracking site.
April 5, 2023. Hail of up to 2.0 inches, about the size of a hen egg, reported near Cinco Ranch by spotters (same compilation).
May 16, 2024. A derecho crossed the Houston metro. The National Weather Service put estimated gusts near 100 mph downtown and measured 78 mph at Highlands, and its survey found two EF1 tornadoes in southern Cypress, including one in Bridgeland. These are metro and Cypress figures. No gust speed for a specific Katy address is quoted here because none has been verified.
July 8, 2024. Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda as a Category 1 storm. In the Katy and nearby area, Covering Katy News documented a tree falling on a Cinco Ranch home, roof damage, street flooding at more than eight City of Katy locations, and overflow from South Mayde Creek.
May 9, 2026. Quarter-size hail reported in Katy proper (same compilation). Nothing larger for 2025 or 2026 has been found.

How to Read This

Hail sizes are spotter reports

They come from a storm-tracking site that aggregates National Weather Service spotter reports. The NOAA Storm Events Database is the primary record, and anyone relying on a size for a decision should check it.

April is the peak month

Hail near Katy has clustered in April. That describes a pattern in the record, not a forecast.

Wind matters more than hail here

The two 2024 events were wind events. Wind damages seals, ridge cap and flashing without leaving marks visible from the ground. See storm and wind damage inspection.

Roof age was not a shield

Communities like Elyson and Cross Creek Ranch are still building, and their roofs were a few years old when both events arrived. See Elyson.

A Note on Insurance

Whether storm damage is covered, and on what terms, is between the homeowner, the agent and the carrier, and the FAQ says what this site can and cannot say about it. Dated photographs of the roof before any repair are worth having whatever the answer turns out to be. Roof inspections produce a written description of the roof, which is the roofing contractor’s part.
