Fiber-cement is the siding most Katy contractors mean when they say an upgrade. It does not swell like hardboard, and it is the product a great many newer Katy homes already carry. The way it is installed still decides whether it lasts.
Fiber-cement is cement, sand and cellulose fiber pressed into plank, panel or shingle profiles. It does not absorb water the way hardboard does, it does not feed termites, and it does not burn. It is heavy, it needs to be cut with the right tools, and it is a painted product: its finish is a factory coat or a field-applied paint system that is part of what is being purchased.
